Quantitative and qualitative relation between beach characteristic and number of observed nests of Green turtle Chelonia mydas at Cayo Largo is shown. The nest quantification was carried out by patrolling and direct count in reproduction season for this species (June-September) in period 2002-2006. A total of 7 beaches were identified with sands strips between 5 and 50 m of wide and between 70 and 4 060 m of length. Annual nesting between 1 114 and 1 866 nests was registered. Maximum number of nests per beaches was 837 nests at Mal Tiempo which also was the maximum value of density (360 nest/km). A positive trend to increase for all key was observed. Results indicate Cayo Largo as main site of nesting of green turtle in Cuba and one of the most important...

OceanDocs
Azanza Ricardo,J.; Borrego, R.; Same-Vargas, N.; Cruz Sosa, E.; Sergio Cabrera, E.; Pantoja, R.; García López, L.; Rodríguez García, A..

Ant fauna (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) associated to arboreal nests of Nasutitermes spp: (Isoptera, Termitidae) in a cacao plantation in southeastern Bahia, Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Santos,Pollyanna Pereira; Vasconcellos,Alexandre; Jahyny,Benoit; Delabie,Jacques Hubert Charles.
Ants are among the most common arthropods that colonize termite nests. The aim of this study was to identify the ant fauna associated to termite nests found in a cacao plantation in the county of Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil, with emphasis on the fauna that uses the nests as foraging and/or nesting environment. For this purpose, 34 active, decadent and abandoned nests of Nasutitermes corniger, N. ephratae and Nasutitermes sp., with different volumes and degrees of activity, were dissected. A total of 54 ant species, belonging to 23 genera and five subfamilies, was found in the constructions. The active, decadent and abandoned termite nests presented, respectively, six, eight and 48 ant species. Crematogaster acuta and Ectatomma tuberculatum were the most frequent...

Bird-termite interactions in Brazil: A review with perspectives for future studies Biota Neotropica
de Vasconcelos,Marcelo Ferreira; Hoffmann,Diego; de Araújo,Mércia Caroline; Vasconcelos,Prinscila Neves.
We present a review on the principal interactions between birds and termites in Brazil. We found 218 bird species feeding on termites or using termitaria for nesting or perching. Termites were mentioned as food source for 179 bird species. Alates were the most consumed caste. Termitaria were mentioned as nest site for 45 bird species. Some bird species also perch on the top of termite mounds to search for their prey or to conduct territorial and/or courtship displays. Considering all interactions between both animal groups, little is known about the identification of termite genera or species. Therefore, we suggest more detailed studies to be conducted on the natural history and ecology of interactions between birds and termites in Brazil.

The nesting habits of the leaf-cutter ant Acromyrmex laticeps nigrosetosus Forel were studied in areas under Eucalyptus plantations in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. A total of 12 nests were killed with methyl bromide and talcum was injected into entrance holes with a small air pump to mark the underground chambers and channels. In general, these nests presented a single chamber with average dimensions of 0.28 x 0.23 x 0.19 m (length x width x height) located just below the soil surface (0.11 m). Chambers were connected to the soil surface by 2-5 channels which opened at the surface. Externally they were covered by a large amount of dry leaves and in their early stage presented a mound of loose soil. The total nest population was, on average, 12,231...

The San Bernardo Archipelago, in the Colombian Caribbean zone, is well recognized for being a sporadic nesting and feeding area for the green, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles. Due to the fact that the San Bernardo Archipelago has outstanding coral areas, marine grasses and sandy beaches and their environmental offers for the marine turtles have not been described yet, it was opportune to carry out this study between July and October of 2002. Thus, this research tends to fill this gap by describing the nesting beaches and feeding areas according to their geomorphologic and biotic aspects and, for the later areas, some oceanographic aspects too. Seven potential nesting beaches and 20 stations on feeding areas were evaluated to identify natural and...

Effects of nest box size on the nesting and renesting pattern of Aphrastura spinicauda and Troglodytes aedon Ecología austral
Vergara,Pablo M.
Using large and small nest boxes I determined the effect of the nest box size upon nesting and renesting probability, as well as the reproductive success of two secondary cavity nesters, the thorn-tailed rayadito (Aphrastura spinicauda) and the house wren (Troglodytes aedon) was determined comparing large and small boxes. In order to assess these effects nest boxes were monitored by two consecutive years. Results indicated that Aphrastura nested mainly in the large instead of the small nest boxes, and nesting Troglodytes used primarily small nest boxes. Nevertheless, the renesting pattern of both species, including renesting attempts after successful fledging and after nest failure, was not affected by nest box size and the probability of renesting was not...

A research programm on the marine green turtle Chelonia mydas nesting on the two major reproduction sites for the species in the Indian Ocean, conducled over last 15 years, included intensive tagging programm. Processing of these lagging data provides estimations of adult female populations {or each site and season from two independent methods. First classical method is the ratio of total number of nests produced over a define time on the mean individual number of nests by female during the same time (November, December, January). The computed mean individual number ranges from 3 to 3.5 obtained over 2 to 3 months. The second method is the multiple capture-recapture method (JOLLY, 1965; SEBER, 1965; MANLY, 1984). Il is an original tentative of applying...

Krabbe,Niels; Sureda,Ana Laura; Canelo,Roberto.
A group of several Andean Parakeet (Bolborhynchus orbygnesius) individuals was observed, photographed and tape-recorded at Finca El Candado, near Los Cardones National Park, Salta Province, northwestern Argentina. There is no previously published record of Andean Parakeet from south of Cochabamba, Bolivia, although there is a tape-recording from Tarija, Bolivia, which is about 350 km north-northwest of Finca El Candado. Additionally, there is an undocumented record of a group of birds 218 km north-northwest of Finca El Candado, between Valle Colorado and Santa Ana, in Jujuy Province, Argentina. Birds were coming to roost in a large stick nest that did not look like any described nest. We do not know if the parrots had constructed this nest entirely or...

Geological characteristics of the nesting areas of the giant Amazon river turtle (Podocnemis expansa) in the Crixás-Açu river in Goiás State, Brazil Acta Amazonica
Ferreira Júnior,Paulo Dias; Castro,Paulo de Tarso Amorim.
A large population of the giant Amazon river turtle (Podocnemis expansa) nests along the beaches of the Crixás-Açu River in the central western region of Brazil. In spite of the existence of several point bars in the area, only a selected group of beaches is used for nesting by P. expansa. Geological aspects, such as river width and depth, beach height above 200 cm with sandy sediments, were indispensable for the choice of these nesting sites. The relatively reduced dimensions of the point bars and the great number of turtles, which nest in the same local, contributed to the existence of a high nest concentration. The rapid rise of the Crixás-Açu River caused the flooding of the beaches and the drowning of hatchlings and embryos. It is estimated that...

Nest architecture of the stingless bee Geotrigona subterranea (Friese,1901) (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini) Biota Neotropica
Barbosa,Fernando Mendes; Alves,Rogério Marcos de Oliveira; Souza,Bruno de Almeida; Carvalho,Carlos Alfredo Lopes de.
We located ten nests of Geotrigona subterranea in the transition area between Cerrado and Caatinga within the municipalities of Lontra and Januária, state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. We collected the nests to study their architecture in detail. In the present paper, we describe the general nest structure of this bee species in terms of: number, shape and area of the combs; size of the brood cells; size of honey and pollen pots; volume of honey and mass of pollen stored in closed pots; presence of inquiline species; and defensive characteristics. All nests were found in subterranean cavities. The nest structure of G. subterranea is similar to that of other congeneric species.

Nesting behavior of the swallow-tailed hummingbird, Eupetomena macroura (Trochilidae, aves) BJB
ONIKI,Y.; WILLIS,E. O..
An August or winter nestling of Eupetomena macroura was fed only every 40-50 min for at least 24 days in the nest, with fewer feedings at midday. As in other hummingbirds, it was brooded only the first week or two, and left alone even on cool nights after 12 days, probably due to the small nest size. The female attacked birds of many non-nectarivore species near the nest, in part probably to avoid predation. Botfly parasitism was extremely high, as in some other forest-edge birds.

REFORMA AGRÁRIA NO SUDOESTE DO PARANÁ: ORIGEM E SITUAÇÃO ATUAL DO ASSENTAMENTO MISSÕES AgEcon
Lima, Romilda De Souza; Lauffer, Jovilde Girardello.

The Magdalena River Turtle, Podocnemis lewyana, is an endangered and endemic turtle from Colombia. Among the most important information needed to conserve endangered species is to identify, monitor, and protect the sites used by the species to reproduce and grow. In this study we report, for the first time, the reproductive output and the nesting beaches of P. lewyana in the Claro Cocorná Sur River, a tributary of the Magdalena River drainage. We systematically examined a river transect of 8 km with 14 sandy beaches during two nesting seasons in one year. We recorded a yearly production of 47 clutches, 957 eggs, and two preferred nesting beaches: Alto Bonito with 51 %, and Bélgica with 28.3 % of this reproductive output. AAFUVER, a community-based...
